Tree Protection Information

Emerald Ash Borer, the Gypsy Moth and Japanese Beetles have made their presence known in the McHenry and Lake County areas.  To help combat these pests, Nierman Landscape and Design is pleased to announce that we will be offering direct injection for trees.  This process does not require drilling into the trees, as with older methods. It is proven to be highly effective!

The Gypsy Moth is an introduced pest from Europe.  The insect destroys the tree by eating the leaves.  This will weaken and eventually kill the tree.  It attacks mainly Oaks and Hickories.  It has been seen attacking Maples, Ashes,  Willows and Evergreens.  The best time to control the Gypsy Moth is in the Caterpillar Stage. The first signs of an infestation is an egg sack on the tree.  The egg sack looks a lot like smeared peanut butter on the bark of the tree.

The Emerald Ash Borer is an introduced pest from Asia.  It is new to Illinois, and has migrated here from Michigan and Indiana.  The EAB only attacks Ash trees which has been used extensively in Residential and Commercial Landscapes.  The Borer is only about 3/4 of an inch long, and extremely hard to see.  Early detection is the most important step!  The first sign of the EAB is a notch in the leaves of your Ash Tree.

The Japanese Beetle is another invasive pest from Asia.  This insect is particularly fond of Linden trees.  It has been seen attacking Rose Bushes, Chokeberries, Burning Bush as well as other trees, shrubs and perennial plants.  The Japanese Beetle can be controlled in the the grub stage with a pesticide application to the lawn as well as the adult stage when it is seen attacking trees, shrubs and perennials.

Nierman Landscape and Design recommends the direct injection method.  It causes a minimal amount of damage and has a 99% survival rate.  Click here for more information.
